Hybrid Cars: Introduction

A hybrid car is a vehicle with two or more power sources to drive from point A to point B. It combines the two sources of power and distributes them to all four wheels. In hybrid cars, different motors work at a different speed, resulting in more efficient motor and produces better torque, and combustion engines are good at maintaining high speed, which is better than electric motors, so when we switch from one to another at a proper time while speeding up gives a very energy efficient system, resulting in fuel efficiency.

Types of Hybrid Vehicles

There are mainly three types of hybrid vehicles, i.e., full hybrid, mild hybrid, and plug-in hybrid.

  • The Full Hybrid (FHEV) A hybrid vehicle can entirely run on an internal combustion engine IC engine and can run on an electric motor through the power train that transfers the power to the wheels too. The full hybrid vehicles are further divided into the following types:
    • Series hybrid
    • Parallel hybrid
    • Plug-in hybrid
  • Mild Hybrid Vehicle A mild hybrid is limited to parallel hybrid vehicles in which both the systems, i.e., IC engine and electric motor, work together as a team. An electric motor single-handedly cannot move the vehicle and requires help from the internal combustion engine.
  • Plug-In Hybrid Generally, plug-in hybrid vehicles have large capacity batteries as compared to full hybrid vehicles. The battery needs to be charged overnight and can use in the daytime as per convenience

Advantages of Hybrid Cars

  • Environmentally Friendly Hybrid vehicles get greater gas mileage, making them more eco-friendly. The engines of these vehicles are twin-powered. As a result, they use less energy and have a lower carbon footprint.
  • Less Fossil Fuel Dependence Lower emissions mean less reliance on fossil fuels. As a result, the price of gasoline in the market falls, and greenhouse gas emissions are reduced.
  • Regenerative Braking System These cars have a regenerative braking system that eliminates the need to recharge the battery regularly.
  • Lightweight Material Hybrid vehicles are constructed with lightweight materials. It significantly reduces the car's weight by a substantial margin. The engine uses less energy and pollutant levels are reduced as a result of this.
  • Resale Value As the price of gasoline rises, so does the desire for environmentally-friendly vehicles. Fuel prices will be unreasonably high in the future. People will gravitate toward these automobiles. The demand for these vehicles will grow. As a result, prior models of these vehicles will command greater prices.
  • Financial Advantages Financial institutions provide a variety of plans and discounts on the purchase of hybrid automobiles. Similarly, ordinary individuals will be able to acquire such vehicles. When people buy these cars, the government provides them with subsidies.

Hybrid Cars: Disadvantages

  • Less Power These cars aren't known for their speed or acceleration. Engines in hybrid automobiles have fewer horsepower. Their acceleration is slower than that of gasoline-powered automobiles.
  • Expensive Hybrid automobiles are more expensive than conventional gasoline vehicles. These vehicles range in price from $5000 to $10000 and include other additional charges to consider, such as road tax, insurance, and so forth.
  • Cost of Maintenance As technology advances, the cost of maintenance may increase. Furthermore, finding a mechanic who is familiar with such technology is extremely difficult. Because they are new on the market, these cars can produce problems at any time. Such additional costs should be made known to the public.
  • High Voltage Batteries If not handled properly, the batteries used in hybrid vehicles can be fatal. In these vehicles, accidents can be fatal. There is a possibility of electric shock or fire. As a result, buyers must be aware of these possibilities. Companies must educate buyers about such opportunities.

Hybrid Cars: Types of Energy Transformation

  • Electric Only This is a fundamental system in which the number of power sources is the one, i.e., battery. It supplies power to the battery management system, then the power goes to the controller, and then it goes into the motor, and then it goes into the transmission of a vehicle and from there to all four wheels.
  • Hybrid/Electric Assist In this system, two power sources are available to drive a car very efficiently, which are IC engine and battery. An internal combustion engine generates power, and it transfers the power to the mechanical coupling and then to the wheels. At the same time, a battery provides power to the converter, where it converts the energy and then transfers the power to the mechanical couplings and then to the wheels.
  • Battery Charging This is one of the significant advantages of an IC engine that when it generates the power to drive a vehicle, it transfers the power through the power train; while transferring the power, it charges the battery as well.
  • Regenerative Braking In this system, when a clutch is open and applies the brake, it generates the braking force, which gets transferred to the battery, and the battery gets charged. This is also a great source of generating power and charging the battery.

All these systems make an excellent energy-efficient and save fuel which is the primary goal in the coming future.

Hybrid Cars: Should You Buy?

If you conduct most of your driving in and around town, a hybrid car will suit you because you'll get the most advantage from running on electric-only power, which is practically free travel. If you make frequent short journeys and don't require the extra flexibility of a hybrid, an electric car may be a better option for you, as it will provide you with cheap urban transportation and no tailpipe emissions.

If you drive a lot of highway miles, though, you might be better off with a fuel-efficient diesel vehicle. Because motorways and fast A-roads are the kinds of routes where hybrids are least efficient, it's likely to give superior high-speed fuel economy than a hybrid.
