Akshay belongs to a Punjabi family as he was born in Amritsar, Punjab. His father was an army officer, and he spent most of his childhood in Delhi before moving to Bombay (present-day Mumbai).

He has always been driven towards sports and was never interested in studies. Akshay also took admission to Guru Nanak Khalsa College but later dropped out of it due to his lack of curiosity in studies. He always had a keen interest in Karate and moved to Thailand to master this. He is also a black belt in Taekwondo.
